Chapter Nine: Unwanted Memories

March 9th, 2027, 3:15 p.m.
Sgt. Foles Office, K47 Training Facility, Atlantic Ocean

Katia sat down, a bandage on her shoulder, Foles had said there must have been a malfunction in one of the drones' difficulty levels, which is why it threw the knife. They had finished this part of the training, but Katia wasn’t happy with how she had done and neither was Foles. Foles had told her time and time again that she had the most important role, and here she was, with the rest of the squad carrying her around like extra baggage. “If the whole thing were real, they’d be dead because of you,” Foles had scolded her afterward. He didn’t really yell, because that wasn’t like him, but he was definitely angry and unsure. “I expect better from a captain,” he said as he paced the room, “next time I will see better from you. Are we clear?” Katia stared at the floor, like a little kid in trouble with their parents, “Yes, Sir,” she mumbled. Foles put his hands on the table and stared at her, “what was that?” he asked, “Yes, Sir!” Katia said louder. Foles took his hands off the table and rubbed his eyes with one, “You are dismissed.”

“Where is it,” Katia said to herself, wiping the tears from her eyes, “come on, where did I put it.” She rummaged around her room and kitchen, searching the kabinets. If this was an exact replica of her apartment that had all of her items that were previously there, it had to have her secret stash. She even looked under the floorboard under her bed, but it wasn’t there either, she really needed a drink, but there wasn’t any alcohol under the atlantic. She had fucked up today, and she always had a strategy for when she fucked up, she got drunk, and immediately regretted her decisions in the morning. So she found the next best alternative, an entire gallon of rocky road ice cream. She took a few sorrowful bites and just had a good cry, she longed to just get drunk and forget, and never have to worry about it again. But that was the thing, she couldn’t forget, because she never forgot, but thinking of getting drunk just brought back more memories. It was all because of one stupid man. Joshua Hamus. “It isn’t Shane’s fault that all khajiits look the same, especially him and Joshua, but Shane can’t help matters anyways.” Katia said to herself, “Neither of you knew any better, you were just a drunk skooma addict that liked anal that he had found on the streets. And you barely earned any fuck money to afford your broken ass apartment, and any money you didn’t use to pay rent just went in to drinking. The fact that you were drinking illegally and underage didn’t help matters either, skooma was also made illegal in 2022, so that wasn’t the only way you were breaking the law. But then Josh showed up,” she sniffed, “nothing really happened at first, he saw the shape you were in, and he knew it wasn’t your fault. He wanted to make things better. Josh always found a way to make things better, he took you home, did you some small favors, and let you sleep in his bed. I guess that’s where the relationship started, he helped you get off of skooma, gave you money and other shit, and all you really did was repay him in sexual favors. It worked out the first year, then you kind of actually started dating.” Katia looked down at the tub of ice cream in disgust, “and here I am crying like a young khajiit that spilled their milk. Gods… fuck me, what am I doing, I have a mission to do and here I am wallowing over the man that left me two years ago and never came back. But I still miss him, I don’t really know why, I wish I didn’t, I wish this shit never happened to me. Why did the terrorists have to do this, why did one man want so much power, it’s just fucked up.” She put the lid back on the ice cream, and put it in the freezer, “Just like the rest of the world, it’s fucked up. And that’s why you’re here, to make a difference, to set some things right.” Katia told herself, “the past definitely still hurts, but that won’t stop you, and it won’t help you get better either. You have a sickness, a sickness that everyone has, and that everyone has to get over, fear. But fear won’t stop you, you’re Katia Fucking Managan, and you have a mission to do. General Harris gave you a deadline, and it’s almost here. Deadline or not you’ll complete your training, if it’s the last thing you do.” She got up and started dressing, “Fuck protocall,” she said, “you’ll be up and training until you get the damn thing right. ‘Cause you’re Agent Managan, no, Captain Managan now, and there won’t be anymore fucking around.” Katia was dressed in tactical gear now, she opened her door, and walked to room 836 for a midnight training session.

Katia rolled to her next cover option, sweat was dripping down her face and back, she’d been training for two and a half hours now. She had set the droids on the normal difficulty at first then kept going up. She was on one of the hardest levels programmed into the droids, and she hadn’t missed a shot since the last level she did, which was hard mode. So this was basically extreme mode, at least in her mind, the bullets fired by the drones had been real since the last level. Katia had been grazed a few times, but nothing major, dodging was another thing she definitely improved in during this time. She got up, fired two shots at a drone, then ducked down again, there were at least ten of them left, nine to go. She ran from her cover, shooting as she crossed the room, taking out three in six shots, two per drone. Three bullets left in the mag, Katia was behind more cover, feeling the bullets slam and graze it, she had to act fast. Some of the drones had fully automatic pistols, semi-auto rifles, and full auto weapons. Katia peeked from behind, and her left ear got grazed, “fuck these tall ears,” she said grasping her head in pain. She looked back up and fired the last three shots at the drone that shot her, bringing it down, then she switched cover while reloading. Surprisingly she had only used three magazines throughout the entire extreme mode, which would be her last in a mission, but she would never have to try this hard. The practice was good for her, whether it was needed or not, she stood peeked and took a count of how many were left, only six. “Only two shots for each drone, have to make this count,” she thought to herself, and she stood up taking two down before almost going down herself. She took cover again, looking at the last four when she could, kneeled just enough to fire at two more, taking them out as well, four bullets. She took aim at another but was grazed on the arm and missed one of two important shots. Katia killed the one drone she had injured and shot the last in the head, all in quick succession.

“Great precision, concentration, and determination. A good performance all in all.” Katia turned to Foles and immediately pulled the trigger from reflex, if the 9mm weren’t empty the sergeant would’ve been on the ground with a hole in his head. Katia glared at him, “You could’ve died had I not missed a shot, and this gun be empty.” Foles smiled, “Yes, but would I have startled you had you not missed and the gun be empty. Sadly you broke protocol during this little secret training session-” Katia interrupted him, “Protocol can go fuck itself,” she snarled, “you said what I did wasn’t good enough for you. And what isn’t good enough for you isn’t good enough for me, so I decided to fix things.” Foles stared back casually, “precisely Miss Managan, you broke protocol for a worthy cause. Which is why you will face no penalties, I’m glad to say.” Katia looked at herself, then back to Foles, her wounds aching, all her adrenaline gone. “I’m also glad to say that you’ve passed your training, and are now ready to begin your mission.” Katia stared at him, “Wait, so that’s it, I’m finished with the training?” Foles nodded. “But… it seems like there should be more,” she said, “Miss Managan, do you really think you want more training, none the less need it?” Katia stared at the ground, “I can’t believe it, I’m done?” Foles nodded again, “Really this is just the beginning,” he said. Katia looked up and smiled, “Just the start of something new,” Foles smiled back, “Get some rest, because tomorrow morning we leave for the coast of Africa. Oh, and you might want to use your suspension pod…”

Skybolt06: well that was fast! I definitely had more planning on this chapter than the last one, I was also probably more excited about this one cause it reveals more on Katia's past, Joshua's, and their past together. also cause of her overcoming more troubles and stuff, and also, the mission begins in the next chapter!!!
